Abstract

The objectives of this study are to: 1) obtain an overview of the speaking learning process of first year colege students using the picture media; and 2) obtain the results of speaking learning in the first year college students using picture media. The method used is Classroom Action Research with research subjects of first
year college students at Politeknik Piksi Ganesha, consiting of 41 people; 20 male students and 21 female students.Data collection is by doing observation, interviews, field notes, and documentation through recording processes and evaluations in speaking activities. The data obtained is described, analyzed, and
then reflected. The implementation of the action is divided into three cycles with different themes. Each cycle consists of three actions.Learning in the first cycle with the Things In The Classrooms theme, cycle II with the Family Members theme, and cycle III with the Occupation theme. The findings in the first cycle showed
the students could not explain the picture, in cycle II students could not do speaking activities without the help of friends and in the third cycle students still needed teacher guidance to explain the picture. The conclusion of this study is that picture media can improve the process and results of students' speaking
learning. This can be seen from the increase in learning outcomes in each cycle. The average student learning outcomes in the first cycle is 58.55; in the second cycle is 64.18; and in the third cycle is 68.33. This study also provides suggestions for optimizing the use of picture media in speaking learning for the first year
college students.
